Requirements

MA program:

The program requires a balance of academic and practical courses culminating in a thesis project and is usually completed in two years. Students who make this transition have their course work requirement for the doctoral program reduced by one year and are assured of at least two years of funding for their doctoral study. It should be stressed that completion of the MA degree does not automatically qualify the student for admission into the department's Ph.D. program.

PhD program:


Students may be admitted into the doctoral program with either a bachelor's or a master's degree. All students who enter with a bachelor's degree will be required to enroll in the MA/Ph.D program and complete the master's degree in the first two years before advancing to doctoral studies. They will then take a further year of courses before advancing to candidacy. The goal of the MA/Ph.D. and Ph.D. programs in Theater is to train scholars of the theatre, who may also be able to make strong contributions as theatre artists.Seven seminars are offered each academic year. By the time they advance to candidacy, students in the Ph.D. program will have taken a minimum of nine graduate seminars in the department, while students in the MA/Ph.D. will have taken a minimum of 14.

Graduate School Admission Requirements

Academic program admission requirements (see below) may be in addition to, or more rigorous, than the Graduate School requirements.
Grades

A minimum undergraduate grade-point average (GPA) of 3.00 (on a 4.00 scale) on the equivalent of the last 60 semester hours (approximately two years of work). International applicants must have a strong academic performance comparable to a "B" or above average grades. We use your institution's grading scale; do not convert your grades to a four point scale.
Degree

A bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution, or a comparable degree from an international institution.

General Requirements

Each applicant must complete the Indiana University Application for Graduate School admission form. The request on this form for a list of publications and creative work may be abbreviated since each applicant is required to submit a detailed resume of his/her creative work in the theatre. Please note that the Department of Theatre and Drama requires the G.R.E. scores. Three references will be requested. The three persons who write supporting statements in behalf of the applicant should be familiar with the applicant's technical skill, creative ability, and potential for growth. The application will request a 300-500 word statement which should relate to the theatre in general as well as the applicant's special areas of interest. The MFA candidate should apply within one week after on campus or U/RTA auditions.

Auditions and interviews for prospective M.F.A. students in the areas of acting and directing will be held through the University/Resident Theatre Association (212/221-1130) auditions in New York, Chicago, and San Francisco.

Those students not participating in the U/RTA auditions, but wishing to audition for representatives of this department in New York, Chicago, or San Francisco should contact the Theatre and Drama Department Graduate Secretary to make an appointment (812-855-4503). Auditions and interviews on the Bloomington campus are usually held on the first Saturday and Sunday in February. On campus appointments should also be made through the Department Graduate Secretary.

Specific Requirements


Scenic Design, Costume Design, Lighting Design, Theatre Technology

1. Attend the national U/RTA auditions and interviews or call for an interview held at Indiana University, Bloomington campus.
2. Submit a portfolio of appropriate sketches, renderings, working drawings, light plots, photographs; sound tapes, and/or other material that helps demonstrate your technical skill and creative ability in your area of special interest.
3. Provide a resume that lists your creative work in the theatre and related areas.
